WHAT ARE FREE FOODS?

 We all have heard about the cabbage soup diet, the grapefruit diet and the sacred heart diet among many other fads. These are quick fixes to lose some water weight but they are not structured for an actual sustained fat loss. They also have another fact in common; they all contain foods that are known as “free” foods. Foods are considered “free” because they are super low in calories and when you factor in the amount of calories it takes to digest them; their total calorie count ends up technically negative.

 

THE HARSH REALITY

 Eating “free” foods does not mean that you can JUST eat these foods and lose weight. Our bodies need a balanced diet and physical activity to effectively lose weight and maintain the loss. If we are not getting the essential nutrients regularly, your success will be short lived. There are six essential nutrients that the body needs to function properly:

 Free foods should be used as fillers and snack attack options. For example, when you first begin you lifestyle changes and are really paying attention to your portions, you might still be hungry in between your small meals that you are eating 5-6 times per day and especially at dinnertime. So, on your dinner plate you should have vegetables filling half of your plate, the other half should contain one-third of a protein and one-third complex carbohydrates. These foods can be a life saver during a snack attack as well! In those times when you KNOW you are not hungry but you still want to eat or if you are an emotional eater having a bad day and struggling to fight the urge to eat, free foods are totally a great option for you. They will satisfy your urge to eat WITHOUT derailing your day and causing the after-urge guilty feeling that you failed. In moments like these you grow and learn how to manage your thoughts, feeling and behaviors in healthy ways.
