THE BEST WAYS TO CONQUER EMOTIONAL EATING
THE BEST WAYS TO CONQUER EMOTIONAL EATING
WHAT IS EMOTIONAL EATING
It’s Monday morning, you woke up on time, got your work-out in and your feeling invincible! As your workday continues you follow your meal plan like a champ, eating small, balanced meals every two to three hours and smashing you water goals. On your way home traffic is awful!!! You are missing all the lights, get home late and your evening just goes downhill from there. By the time you eat dinner you are rushing to finish your evening activities and go to bed. Once you get into bed your body is still but your MIND is going a mile a minute thinking about what you didn’t get done, what you still have to do and don’t forget the your family obligations. It’s just too much and then you think, “those Oreo’s sure would be good right about now”. What would you do next?
WHY DO WE DO IT
Emotional eating can single-handedly derail any weight loss plan no matter what stage of readiness you are in. Emotional eating happens because food becomes a response to an internal or external emotional cue or trigger. Instead of facing the discomfort of that problem or issue, food becomes the comfort. The drawback to this behavior is that it doesn’t solve a thing and there are other side effects of this action. Feelings of guilt, nausea and long-term health complications can arise if this pattern continues. Not to mention the negative effects on your self-confidence and self-image. Fortunately, there are many tips and techniques to help you understand the cause and end this negative behavior.
HOW CAN WE STOP THE CYCLE
With some discipline, support and a lot of commitment, you can get through these times when your emotions drive you to eat. To start, acknowledge the feelings, thoughts and behaviors associated with the urge. Find out why these situations affect you in this way. Then, declare to yourself that you are NOT going to give in to them, that you are in control and make the DECISION not to eat. Take a walk, go to the gym, do a home work out, whatever you prefer just get physical and move! Physical activity can release that stress, increase your feel good hormones and get you back to a stronger, positive frame of mind. You will also feel AMAZING and exude self-confidence, self-control and pride that you resisted and passed the test. You will be better armed the next time those craving hit.
